Department Of Education Student Loan Forgiveness Notification
Borrowers have reported receiving phone calls, emails, letters, and/or texts offering them relief from their federal student loans or warning them that student loan forgiveness programs would end soon.
The Department of Education recently announced that it would be forgiving the student loans of tens of thousands of borrowers who were misled by their schools.
This is great news for the many people who are struggling to repay their loans, but it also highlights the problem of student loan debt in America.
With the cost of college rising and more people taking out loans to pay for school, the issue of student loan debt is only getting worse.
When Will Student Loan Forgiveness Start?
The student loan repayment will be suspended again until December 31, 2022, with scheduled repayments beginning in January 2023.
The Biden administration is also proposing a rule to create a new payment plan in which borrowers only pay up to 5% of their monthly income on loans. This is an increase from the current 10% threshold.
The Rule will also help increase the income considered as “non-discretionary income.” Any borrower earning less than 225% of the federal poverty level will not have to make a payment.
Borrowers with loan balances of under $12,000 would no longer be required to repay their loans after 10 years of on-time payments, rather than the previous 20-year timeline.
To avoid a borrower’s loan balance from growing while the individual makes payments, under the proposed rule the Biden administration will offset any unpaid monthly interest, even if the monthly payment is $0 due to the individual’s income.
How To Apply For Student Loan Forgiveness 2022
The $10,000 and $20,000 loan forgiveness amounts are means-tested. But the Department of Education does not have income information for all borrowers at the ready. It estimates about 8 million borrowers will be eligible for relief automatically based on its current data.
Applications to access forgiveness may be expected before the end of this year. The office said it will include more information on this topic in the coming weeks.
This red tape enables borrowers to go unnoticed, so some don’t proceed or will submit incorrectly. Non-filers don’t qualify and those who aren’t reached are those who didn’t respond. The Education Department’s email address for a quarter of borrowers in default has a GAO report in January 2022.
